Artist has tradition of giving talent
(Vancouver) – Well known Vancouver artist Barb Wood has a tradition of donating her talent to support the community and city that has been her home for more than 20 years.
Wood’s early training in architecture – she switched from architecture to fine arts in university – is evident in her paintings and etchings of heritage Vancouver landmarks.
Her whimsical, warm-harted, yet well-researched depictions of local scenes – from heritage office buildings to a tribute series of historic corner stores – are filled with people engaged in the busy details of daily life.
A tradition of giving to her community is something Barb Wood shares with McDonald’s of Canada. Wood donates her time and work to groups such as Ronald McDonald’s Children Charities, Ronald McDonald House, Kidney Foundation of Canada, Alzheimer’s Society, Vancouver Food Bank, Canuck Place, and Vancouver General Hospital.
Wood’s upbeat, enthusiastic approach to her community work is reflected in her commercial art. “I think these’s a positive side of life and that”s what I want to show.”
Her firm, Barb Wood Graphics Ltd., designs advertising, graphic and illustrative art for clients such as the Bank of Montreal, Royal Bank, Dairyworld Foods, Bentall Corporation, BC Rail, Statistics Canada, VGH Foundation, St. Pauls Hospital Foundation, Vancouver Parks Board as well as exclusive gifts presented to VIPs and at international gatherings.
Originally from Halifax, Wood moved to Vancouver in 1976 after graduating with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Waterloo. Wood lives in the Kitsilano neighbourhood with her architect husband, Don Hazleden and her two boys Arthur and Roger.
